‘A race to the bottom’: Google temps are fighting a two-tier labor system | Google

Ben Gwin works for Google Shopping in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Though he is technically a temporary worker at the tech giant, Gwin and 65 of his colleagues are now represented by the United Steelworkers union. The group of workers ratified their first union contract in July after two years at the bargaining table with their contractor, HCL America Inc. The contract victory was historic in an industry that has aggressively opposed union drives, especially among temp and contracted employees.

Drug tests are no longer required for most jobs in the municipal offices for Isle, Minnesota, a small town tucked on the southeastern corner of the Mille Lacs Lake. The reason? The town’s liquor store needs just one more person so that its owner, Don Graber, can stop working double shifts on the weekend. “There’s a lot of things that are scaring away potential hires and that was one of them,” Graber told Yahoo Finance. Graber successfully lobbied the town to eliminate the drug test, a… Source link

U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh is giving a thumbs up to the May jobs report, but acknowledges it will take some time for the labor market to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.  “There is no question there is still a ways to go in still dealing with the pandemic from all of the job loss at the beginning of the pandemic,” Walsh said on Yahoo Finance Live.  The Labor Department reported Friday that non-farm payrolls increased by 559,000, falling shy of Wall Street’s estimates for a… Source link

In turn, that has weighed on sales for Red… Source link

Labor Secretary rejects claims that enhanced unemployment benefits are keeping workers on sidelines

After a hugely disappointing April jobs report, U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh rejected claims from Republicans and some businesses that enhanced unemployment benefits are keeping workers from going back to work.  The Labor Department reported the U.S economy added back just 266,000 jobs last month, sharply missing economists’ expectations of 1 million.  “266,000 jobs under normal circumstances — and we’re certainly not living in normal circumstances — would be a good month,” said… Source link
