Google updates Chrome logo after 8 years, still isn’t shiny and chrome enough

Huge news from Google HQ: the company is changing the Chrome web browser logo for the first time in eight years. And it’s stunningly—well, not all that different. To be fair, the new logo is clearly different to the previous one, when viewed side-by-side anyways. It’s brighter, cleaner, and Google has taken the design equivalent of a 10,000 LED light to the front of the logo to eradicate any hint of shadow. That may not be the exact logo you end up seeing on your device, however. Google is… Source link

US will make up 60% of the world’s computing power in 2 years

The vulnerability of Kazakhstan’s bitcoin mining industry was put on full display last week, when the country’s internet shut down in the midst of anti-government protests, sparked by rising energy prices. The world’s second largest miner saw its hash rate or computing power that secures bitcoin, fall by double digits, in a dramatic pullback from the 18.1% it’s estimated to contribute, according to Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance.  The disruption marked a big setback for a market… Source link

What economists are saying about the highest inflation in nearly 40 years

U.S. consumer prices rose at their fastest rate in nearly four decades in December, with inflationary pressures rippling through the economy as supply chain bottlenecks persisted alongside elevated demand.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ December Consumer Price Index (CPI) posted a 7.0% year-over-year increase at the end of 2021 in the fastest increase since 1982. This matched consensus estimates, based on Bloomberg data, but accelerated from November’s 6.8% increase. On a month-over-month… Source link

Will there be a housing market correction in 2022 after two years of ‘hyper-growth’?

High-stakes bidding wars. All-cash offers. Limited supply. After two years of scorching growth in the U.S. housing market, will there be a cool-down and possibly a fall in sales and prices in 2022, along with a return to some normalcy? Um, not exactly, several housing experts tell USA TODAY. “Home sales are likely to be slightly lower in 2022 from the anticipated rise in mortgage rates. Home prices, meanwhile, will continue to rise due to the ongoing housing shortage even as demand is clipped a… Source link

71 years of stock market data reveals investors may be happy in the New Year

After a nearly 29% total return for the S&P 500 this year, history suggests 2022 may see more gains for investors. Truist Advisory Services co-chief investment officer Keith Lerner found that going back to 1950, when the S&P 500 had a total return of at least 25% in a year, stocks usually rose in the following year. The outcome during that 71 year stretch: stocks advanced 82% of the time, or 14 out of 17 instances.  As the data shows, however, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows after a big… Source link

Santa Claus rally time for stock market? 92 years of data says…maybe

The clock has officially begun on a potential year-end Santa Claus Rally for the stock market.  A Santa Claus Rally is one where stocks climb higher in the final seven trading sessions of a year plus the first two trading days of the New Year. Its precise cause has never been greatly explained — theories range from year-end tax considerations to people spending their fat bonuses to buy stocks to general seasonal effects. Wednesday is the first day in this nine session trek for the markets…. Source link

Let’s install Google Toolbar, the project that almost made it 21 years

I was lost and in search of myself after hearing the devastating news on Ars Technica: Google Toolbar had been put down by the search giant after nearly 21 years — longer than most projects the company lets live. (A recent newsletter effort didn’t make it past three months). There was no ceremony, no announcement, no moment of silence, nor any closure — just a “no longer available.” That’s what Google has now on its Install Google Toolbar help page; it tells you how to… Source link

Former NFL wide receiver Josh Bellamy was sentenced to 37 months in prison for a scheme that saw him illegally obtain more than $1.2 million in COVID-19 relief funds.  Bellamy, who last played for the New York Jets in 2019, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud on June 9.
