Google is about to turn on two-factor authentication by default for millions of users

In May, Google announced plans to enable two-factor authentication (or two-step verification as it’s referring to the setup) by default to enable more security for many accounts. Now it’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Google is once again reminding us of that plan, saying in a blog post that it will enable two-factor for 150 million more accounts by the end of this year. In 2018, Google said that only 10 percent of its active accounts were using two-factor authentication. It has… Source link

Your ‘safe’ investing bets could turn out to be a gamble in retirement

Your ‘safe’ investing bets could turn out to be a gamble in retirement The older investors get, the more conservative they tend to be with their money. That’s not the bravado of youth fading away — that’s sound strategy. After all, it’s one thing to play fast and loose when you’re young, but investors nearing retirement don’t have a lot of time to make up for bets gone bad. Unfortunately, many Americans today don’t have the luxury of doing what worked for their parents and grandparents. In… Source link

As COVID-19 restrictions loosen across the United States, the hospitality industry — which was walloped by the pandemic — is experiencing a new challenge: too few workers available to address soaring demand for dining out. A furious debate is underway over what’s behind the labor shortage, which is prompting restaurants to adapt by modernizing with kiosks and digital ordering. Google often uses its annual developer conference, I/O, to showcase artificial intelligence with a wow factor. In 2016, it introduced the Google Home smart speaker with Google Assistant. In 2018, Duplex debuted to answer calls and schedule appointments for businesses. In keeping with that tradition, last month CEO Sundar Pichai introduced LaMDA, AI “designed to have a conversation on any topic.” In an onstage demo, Pichai demonstrated what it’s like to converse with a paper airplane… Source link

Google isn’t ready to turn search into a conversation

The future of search is a conversation — at least, according to Google. It’s a pitch the company has been making for years, and it was the centerpiece of last week’s I/O developer conference. There, the company demoed two “groundbreaking” AI systems — LaMDA and MUM — that it hopes, one day, to integrate into all its products. To show off its potential, Google had LaMDA speak as the dwarf planet Pluto, answering questions about the celestial body’s environment and its… Source link

Google’s Project Starline Videoconference Tech Wants to Turn You Into a Hologram

Bavor’s latter observation is somewhat subjective and a sample of one. The former is a phenomenon that’s actually being studied, now that office workers have spent the past 14 months taking meetings through screens. We are more distracted during video meetings, according to research from Microsoft, and it’s partly a coping mechanism to protect ourselves from the mental strain of too many video meetings. In this context Google’s Project Starline seems especially over-engineered, an… Source link
