Throw away onions if you don’t know where they’re from, CDC says

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked fresh whole onions to a growing and mysterious salmonella outbreak. In a food safety alert Wednesday, the CDC said 652 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg from 37 states as of Oct. 18. The number of cases is expected to grow as more illnesses are reported. Google is using AI to help users explore the topics they’re searching for — here’s how

“Can you get medicine for someone at the pharmacy?” It’s a simple enough question for humans to understand, says Pandu Nayak, vice president of search at Google, but such a query represents the cutting-edge of machine comprehension. You and I can see that the questioner is asking if they can fill out a subscription for another person, Nayak tells The Verge. But until recently, if you typed this question into Google, it would direct you to websites explaining how to fill out your… Source link

They Relied on Chinese Vaccines. Now They’re Battling Outbreaks.

They Relied on Chinese Vaccines. Now They’re Battling Outbreaks.

Mongolia promised its people a “COVID-free summer.” Bahrain said there would be a “return to normal life.” The tiny island nation of the Seychelles aimed to jump-start its economy. All three put their faith, at least in part, in easily accessible Chinese-made vaccines, which would allow them to roll out ambitious inoculation programs at a time when much of the world was going without. But instead of freedom from the coronavirus, all three countries are now battling a surge in… Source link

People hospitalized with COVID-19 now have one overwhelming thing in common. They’re not vaccinated.

In Minnesota, the HealthPartners system has seen a “precipitous decline” in COVID-19 hospitalizations, says Dr. Mark Sannes, an infectious disease physician and senior medical director for the system, which operates nine hospitals and more than 55 clinics. But now, nearly every admitted patient he does see is unvaccinated. “Less than 1% of our hospitalized COVID patients are vaccinated,” he said. In Ohio, at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, only 2% of the COVID-19 patients… Source link

Vaccinated Americans are ready to drop their masks after CDC shift. But they’re not ready to socialize with the unvaccinated.

According to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, the CDC’s surprise shift could finally signal the beginning of the end of masking in the U.S. — while also ushering in a new era defined by growing divisions between vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans. Google Made Advertising Concessions to Travel Partners But They’re Still Angry – Skift

As the pandemic brought travel to a standstill in the first quarter and bookings were cancelled en masse, advertisers spent millions of dollars on Google advertising that turned into nothing. Since then, Google made concessions to some advertisers — but they scoff at the paltry amount. Eight German travel companies that sent a letter to Google at the end of April seeking payment concessions on $80 million in first quarter advertising invoices ultimately got relief of less than 10 percent… Source link
