USC, UCLA could leave Pac-12 for Big Ten

Is more realignment coming in college athletics? USC and UCLA are planning to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News is reporting. According to Wilner, arguably the most plugged-in reporter on the Pac-12, the move could come to fruition as early as 2024 but “has not been finalized at the highest levels of power.” Minutes after the news from Wilner dropped, several other outlets reported that USC and UCLA are in negotiations to join the Big Ten. Big Ten, Pac-12 losing CFP juice to SEC

The two most common reasons to walk away from a proposed business deal are that a) you no longer want to be in that business/deal or b) when negotiations inevitably resume, you believe you can get more favorable terms. Last week, the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 — or “The Alliance” as they call themselves — bailed on a proposed expansion of the College Football Playoff from four teams to 12. Seven conferences — most notably the SEC — and Notre Dame were in favor of the proposal. Since… Source link

Was the struggling Big Ten overrated all along?

So much for this year being the Big Ten’s best chance to end its 21-year national title drought. College basketball’s supposed strongest league has been the NCAA tournament’s biggest disappointment. Nine Big Ten teams secured NCAA tournament bids on Selection Sunday, more than any other league in college basketball. Eight days later, only Michigan is still alive. The carnage started in the First Four when Michigan State squandered a 14-point lead against UCLA. Purdue then crumbled in the… Source link

Ten head coaching hires, none of them Black. Why?

Is college football going to hire any African American coaches this year? Just wondering, because the trend certainly isn’t headed in that direction. Last season, the 120 FBS schools employed 13 Black head coaches. Three were fired and no African Americans have been hired yet this year (10 open positions have been filled by 10 white men). And, yes, we know, “college football” isn’t a singular entity. Individually, each hire can be justified (well, unless you read fan message boards)…. Source link
