Google’s ‘quantum supremacy’ usurped by researchers using ordinary supercomputer – TechCrunch

Back in 2019, Google proudly announced they had achieved what quantum computing researchers had sought for years: proof that the esoteric technique could outperform traditional ones. But this demonstration of “quantum supremacy” is being challenged by researchers claiming to have pulled ahead of Google on a relatively normal supercomputer. To be clear, no one is saying Google lied or misrepresented its work — the painstaking and groundbreaking research that led to the quantum… Source link

Ordinary computers can beat Google’s quantum computer after all | Science

If the quantum computing era dawned 3 years ago, its rising sun may have ducked behind a cloud. In 2019, Google researchers claimed they had passed a milestone known as quantum supremacy when their quantum computer Sycamore performed in 200 seconds an abstruse calculation they said would tie up a supercomputer for 10,000 years. Now, scientists in China have done the computation in a few hours with ordinary processors. A supercomputer, they say, could… Source link

Amazon and Google set to attend White House forum on quantum technology

WASHINGTON, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), Google (GOOGL.O) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) are expected to join a Biden administration conference on Tuesday focused on quantum technologies as the U.S. government works to head off hacking threats and corner a burgeoning growth industry. The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is hosting the event that will discuss critical applications of quantum computing, which is expected to operate millions of times faster… Source link

Google’s quantum computer generates new phase of matter: Time crystals

In a paper published last month on the research-sharing platform Arxiv.org, a team of over 100 scientists describe how they set up an array of 20 quantum particles, or qubits, to serve as a time crystal. During experiments, they applied algorithms that spun the qubits upward and downward, generating a controllable reaction that could be sustained “for infinitely long times,” according to the paper. Google Reports 100-Fold Improved Quantum Error Suppression

Error mitigation is perhaps the biggest challenge and barrier to implementing practical quantum computing in the era of noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) computers. Last week, Google reported promising use of so-called “stabilizer code” on its 54-qubit Sycamore quantum processor to suppress errors. The recent work, published in Nature Communications, reduced the number of errors requiring correction 100-fold per round, reported Google researchers. There’s a good account,… Source link

Google will use quantum computing to help develop new drugs

TipRanks 3 “Strong Buy” Stocks with Over 9% Dividend Yield Markets ended 2020 on a high note, and have started 2021 on a bullish trajectory. All three major indexes have recently surged to all-time highs as investors seemingly looked beyond the pandemic and hoped for signs of a rapid recovery. Veteran strategist Edward Yardeni sees the economic recovery bringing its own slowdown with it. As the COVID vaccination program allows for further economic opening, with more people getting back to… Source link

JPM: Boehringer partners with Google to bring quantum computing to biopharma R&D

Quantum computing is quickly becoming more science than fiction, and Boehringer Ingelheim hopes to be out in front in bringing it to biopharma R&D. Through a new partnership with Google, the drugmaker hopes to harness its promised speeds and capabilities to simulate the body’s biological mechanics at the molecular level and help discover and design new treatments. The three-year pharmaceutical project is the first of its type for Google’s Quantum AI division, and will be co-led by… Source link
