Analyzing MLB pitchers’ strong and slow starts

Entering Week 8 of the MLB season, let’s use CSW (my favorite quick and dirty stat) to identify pitchers whose strong (or slow) starts appear real (or not). I used 250 pitches thrown as the qualifying threshold. The Good CSW Corbin Burnes, Milwaukee Brewers (No. 1 in CSW) He leads all starters by a significant margin, as if you needed further proof his ridiculous start was real. He finally walked his first batter of the season during his return from the IL last week, but a 58:1 K:BB line will… Source link

Look around MLB for latest news, notes

I try to stay open-minded as a fantasy player and a fantasy analyst. And I’ll openly admit, I love unicorns. Lamar Jackson’s MVP season was a blast. Ichiro Suzuki, sui generis. When Tim Anderson won a batting title despite 15 piddly walks, I thought it was awesome. You do you, Timmy. But it’s easy to remember the outlier approaches that succeed. Sometimes outlier approaches fail miserably, or at least tax and torment us. Transition to today’s problem: what the heck do we do with Dallas… Source link

MLB news, notes from weekend

Dylan Bundy deserves your patience After getting lit up over the weekend, Bundy sits with an ugly 5.03 ERA. The poor outing came against a Dodgers offense that entered with the second-best wRC+ in baseball, and the game featured a whopping 25 runs scored. Bundy still has a 1.14 WHIP, ranks top-25 in CSW and is in the top 10% of the league in fastball spin rate and Hard Hit%, so you should absolutely add him if he was dropped in your fantasy league. He has a 3.09 expected ERA and has had to… Source link

MLB news: Angels releasing Albert Pujols

Future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols is being released by the Los Angeles Angels, the team announced on Thursday. The news was first reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.  Pujols is officially being designated for assignment, which means he’s being immediately removed from the team’s 40-man roster as a prelude to his eventual release. No reason has been given by the Angels or Pujols himself, but it may stem from an incident that reportedly happened on Wednesday.  In a statement, Angels owner… Source link

MLB news, notes and more

Fernando Tatis Jr.’s shoulder appears to be OK Tatis went wild over the weekend during yet another fantastic Padres/Dodgers series (can we please eliminate the archaic method of determining playoff teams by division?), swatting five homers and stealing two bags over his last three games while on the road against strong LA pitching (including a notable showdown with Trevor Bauer).  Tatis is on pace to finish with 47 homers and 27 steals (and 61 errors) despite missing 10 games and sporting a… Source link

MLB news, notes and analysis from Monday

Let’s check a few items at the door. I was born in New England. I grew up a diehard Red Sox fan. My dog is named Fenway. I’ve taken the Kenmore stop off the T many times. (Please don’t ask me about Wonderland.) Alas, the team overpaid my fandom back, and then some, through the years. All I ever wanted was one championship in my lifetime — the Red Sox won several. Obviously I never threw a pitch, set a lineup, or made a trade. It has nothing to do with me. And trust me I get it, the… Source link
