This isn’t the Bucks team of last season

The Milwaukee Bucks didn’t have a warm-up act, no time to build confidence against a lower-seeded piñata, walking right into the fire against the team that exposed them last summer. And instead of cowering or falling to old habits, the Bucks made the Miami Heat go “poof” in quick fashion, perhaps the first step in changing the narrative — or at the very least, returning the favor in exposing Miami’s roster flaws, creating questions for the future. The first team to sweep its… Source link

Google isn’t ready to turn search into a conversation

The future of search is a conversation — at least, according to Google. It’s a pitch the company has been making for years, and it was the centerpiece of last week’s I/O developer conference. There, the company demoed two “groundbreaking” AI systems — LaMDA and MUM — that it hopes, one day, to integrate into all its products. To show off its potential, Google had LaMDA speak as the dwarf planet Pluto, answering questions about the celestial body’s environment and its… Source link

Tom Brady isn’t a fan of the new number rule

Tom Brady says one NFL rule change is going to “make for a lot of bad football.”  Brady took the new number rule to task on Instagram on Thursday, saying the regulation would cause problems for offensive linemen. Brady’s specific gripe is that players won’t know who to block now that linebackers can wear any number between 1 and 59 and defensive backs can wear any number between 1 and 49. Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode Isn’t What You Think

Over the weekend, Bloomberg reported that a District Court Judge in San Jose, California, ordered that a lawsuit against Google could continue. The lawsuit alleges that Google continues to track users in Chrome, even when they use incognito mode, and asks for as much as $2 billion damages. At this point, the Judge has only said that the lawsuit could move forward and that Google’s motion to dismiss it was premature. Whether anyone will ever see any kind of payment is still a long way off, but… Source link

Warren Buffett explains why Berkshire Hathaway isn’t a typical conglomerate

Famed investor Warren Buffett says Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A, BRK-B), the sprawling investment conglomerate, differs from the typical conglomerates that have earned terrible reputations. “Berkshire is often labeled a conglomerate, a negative term applied to holding companies that own a hodge-podge of unrelated businesses. And, yes, that describes Berkshire – but only in part,” Buffett wrote in his widely-read annual letter. The 90-year-old investor pointed out that historically… Source link

On Wednesday, a report from 9to5Google brought attention to a feature on Wear OS that hasn’t been working for months, according to a thread on Google’s Issue Tracker. Google has now responded that it is “aware of the issues some users have been encountering”. Google has also noted that it will “address these and improve the overall experience” with its partner OEMs. Using the “Hey Google” hotword should summon Google Assistant on a Wear OS smartwatch while the screen is… Source link

GameStop’s saga may be over; its effect on Wall Street isn’t

NEW YORK (AP) — The frenzy around GameStop’s stock may have quieted down, but the outsized influence small investors had in the saga is likely to stick around. No one expects another supernova like GameStop to happen again, where a band of smaller-pocketed investors helped boost a struggling company’s stock 1,000% in two weeks. But the tools they employed can be used again and again, if those smaller investors stay connected on social media forums and if regulators don’t change the… Source link

“Don’t be evil” isn’t a normal company value. But Google isn’t a normal company.

Silicon Valley is full of lofty ideals. But few are as lofty as Google’s most famous motto: “Don’t be evil.” If you know anything about Google’s culture, you’ve probably heard those three words. They’re catchy. Quotable. Even mockable. “Don’t be evil” was at the top of the company’s code of conduct for over a decade, seeing the company through its exponential rise from scrappy startup to tech giant. The ideal is legendary. And its origin story is particularly… Source link
