Google Search’s knowledge panels have a misinformation problem

Google Search’s knowledge panels have a misinformation problem

Hristo Georgiev recently received a troubling message from a friend: Google says he’s a serial killer. If you Googled his name, the search engine would serve up Georgiev’s professional headshot alongside a Wikipedia article about a Bulgarian serial killer with the same name who died in 1980. This is an unfortunate error, but it’s also not the first time Google’s algorithms have done something like this. The actual Wikipedia article surfaced in Georgiev’s results didn’t include… Source link

Google Delays The Cookiepocalypse

Google Delays The Cookiepocalypse

Yesterday, Google announced an updated timeline for its Privacy Sandbox milestones; in its blog post are two major announcements that marketers should focus on:  Google says it’s planning to develop a more rigorous process to test and deploy Privacy Sandbox proposals across various use cases, like ad measurement, targeting and fraud detection. The goal is to deploy these by late 2022, help scale adoption, and only then start to deprecate third-party cookies. Under this plan, 3P cookies… Source link

Google has started warning users when they search for a topic that is likely to have poor results, as part of its effort to tackle “data voids” on the search engine. The new warning was spotted by Renee DiResta, an academic who studies misinformation at Stanford University. “It looks like these results are changing quickly,” Google will now caution users. “If this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.” “First time I’ve seen this… Source link

Google delays phase out of tracking tech by nearly 2 years

Google will delay by nearly two years the phase out of Chrome web browser technology that tracks users for ad purposes, saying that it needs more time to develop a replacement system. The tech giant on Thursday moved its deadline to remove so-called third-party cookies to late 2023 rather than January 2022 as was initially planned. “We need to move at a responsible pace, allowing sufficient time for public discussion on the right solutions and for publishers and the advertising industry to… Source link

Google to Android devs: Support more form factors, get a higher sales cut

Enlarge / Google: “Just look at all these form factors!” There are 3 billion active Android devices in circulation now, and that means developers are eager to support Android. The vast majority of those devices are phones, so for app developers not particularly interested in the wider Android ecosystem, that means pump out a phone app and you’re done. A vibrant ecosystem of non-phone Android hardware is also out there, though—Wear OS,… Source link

Amazon and Google investigated in UK over fake product reviews

Amazon and Google investigated in UK over fake product reviews

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said Friday that its formal inquiry, which builds on a preliminary probe launched last May, could force Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOGL) to change the way they deal with fake reviews or result in court action. “Our worry is that millions of online shoppers could be misled by reading fake reviews and then spending their money based on those recommendations,” CMA chief executive Andrea Coscelli said in a statement. “Equally, it’s simply not fair if… Source link
