The University of Miami withdrew on Sunday from its scheduled Sun Bowl appearance against Washington State, citing a COVID-19 outbreak on the roster.  The withdrawal prompted Washington State head coach Jake Dickert to offer to play “any opponent” in the game scheduled for Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. Dickert, whose Cougars are already in El Paso, made the plea on Twitter.  It wasn’t immediately clear who, if anyone, would be able to replace Miami as of Sunday evening. The Military Bowl won’t be played as scheduled on Monday while the Fenway Bowl will have to wait another year to happen. Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel reported that both games aren’t going to happen because of COVID-19 issues among teams set to participate in them. The Military Bowl is off because Boston College doesn’t have enough players to play East Carolina while Virginia is unable to play SMU in the Fenway Bowl on Wednesday. UAB got its second bowl win in team history Saturday.  DeWayne McBride rushed for over 180 yards in the Blazers’ 31-28 upset over No. 13 BYU in the Independence Bowl. The win means UAB finishes the season at 9-4 and has won at least nine games in three of the past four seasons. It’s an incredible turnaround for a program that didn’t exist in 2015 and 2016 after it was shut down. Long suffering New York Giants fans are marking an auspicious anniversary. This February will be 10 years since the Giants beat the New England Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI . The former star wide receiver Victor Cruz helped lead the Giants to victory, catching four balls for 25 yards and a touchdown. Since then, the team has been unable to win a playoff game. A wild final week of the season gave us more bowl-eligible teams than bowl spots. With teams like North Texas and LSU pulling upsets, 83 teams finished the season at 6-6 or better. There are 82 bowl spots, so someone is going to get left out. Who will it be? There are a couple candidates. The first is a team from the MAC like Ball State or Miami (Ohio).
