Brian Griese is headed back to the league. The former “Monday Night Football” analyst is leaving ESPN and will become the next quarterbacks coach with the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Griese will replace Rich Scangarello in San Francisco, who left to become Kentucky’s offensive coordinator. It will mark his first coaching job in the NFL. Jerry Rice says 49ers should have gone for it on 4th down

The greatest receiver in NFL history wanted the San Francisco 49ers to be more aggressive in the NFC championship. Rice questioned the 49ers’ decision to punt on a crucial 4th-and-2 late in the contest, saying, “You gotta go for it.” Rice spoke about that game — and a number of other topics — with Jared Quay of Yahoo Sports. Rice wasn’t too keen to talk about the NFC championship at first, but quickly aired a complaint about the contest. “You just hurt me, big time,” Rice said. “Because… Source link

Jeff Garcia retreats after Mina Kimes proven right about 49ers

It’s so ironic, and also … let me find just the right word … so darn gratifying. A man who spent the whole week demeaning a woman, going on any platform that would have him to criticize her, turning tail and hiding when he got pushback for being sexist and loud and wrong. It served absolutely no purpose last week to highlight the outdated-yet-still-breathing brand of misogyny employed by Jeff Garcia, because it wasn’t new. Garcia wasn’t the first man to cry that a woman who never played… Source link

49ers fans flood SoFi for NFC championship vs. Rams

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Walk around SoFi Stadium before Sunday’s NFC championship game, and it’s easy to forget who the home team is. A sea of red-clad San Francisco 49ers fans poured into parking lots a few hours before kickoff despite the Rams’ best efforts all week to protect their home-field advantage. One carload of 49ers supporters honked their horn and waved team gear out their windows as they approached the stadium. Other big groups of 49ers fans posed for pictures in front of the… Source link

Rams don’t want 49ers fans at SoFi Stadium

When the Green Bay Packers lost on Saturday, the Los Angeles Rams’ sales department was ready.  Saturday’s result ensured that the winner of Sunday’s NFC divisional round playoff game between the Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers would host the NFC championship game. In a show of optimism, the Rams were promoting ticket sales on Sunday morning. With one caveat.  No 49ers fans allowed. At least the ones who live in San Francisco — or anywhere else outside of Los Angeles. Facing the prospect of… Source link

Mike McCarthy stands by final Cowboys play vs. 49ers

Three days later, Mike McCarthy is standing by the ill-fated final play that saw the clock run out on the Dallas Cowboys‘ season. In his first public comments since his postgame news conference on Sunday, McCarthy discussed with reporters that final play from Sunday’s playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He also addressed speculation about his job status. While he says he would run the play again, he’d like to see something change on Dak Prescott‘s execution — and it doesn’t involve… Source link

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has sprained shoulder

Jimmy Garoppolo started Sunday’s win over the Dallas Cowboys with a torn ligament in his right thumb. Before it was over, he suffered a sprain to his right shoulder. Now, he’s dealing with both as the San Francisco 49ers prepare to face Aaron Rodgers and the top-seeded Green Bay Packers in Saturday’s NFC divisional-round playoff game.  Head coach Kyle Shanahan updated reporters on Garoppolo’s status on Monday. He described the shoulder sprain as “slight” and expects Garoppolo to practice and… Source link

Cowboys have miserable end in sloppy loss to 49ers

On Dec. 26, in a prime-time game, the Dallas Cowboys beat Washington by 42 points. While the hype after that game was out of control, it was justified. The Cowboys looked Super Bowl-worthy.  A few weeks later, that same team went one-and-done in the playoffs.   The Cowboys are on an improbable streak. They haven’t played in a conference championship game since the end of the 1995 season. This failure will linger for a long time. It’s a team that had the offensive and defensive stars to make… Source link

49ers make playoffs with late rally, overtime win

At about 2:30 p.m. PT, it looked like the San Francisco 49ers‘ season was dying. It was back on life support at a little bit before 4 p.m. too.  Somehow, the 49ers made it to the postseason. They came back from a 17-0 deficit against the Los Angeles Rams to tie it. Jimmy Garoppolo overcame a bad fourth-quarter interception to lead an enormous 88-yard touchdown drive to tie it with 26 seconds left. Then in overtime, Garoppolo led a field-goal drive to take the lead and rookie cornerback Ambry… Source link
