Twitter, TikTok, Google, and Facebook promise to boost protections for women online

At the UN Generation Equality Forum in Paris on Thursday Twitter, TikTok, Google, and Facebook committed to tackling online abuse and improving safety for women on their platforms. The pledge came following consultations with the World Wide Web Foundation (WWWF) over the past year, aimed at examining online gender-based violence and abuse. The WWWF said the consultations showed women want more control over who could reply or comment on their social media posts and more choice around what… Source link

Here’s why Elon Musk is wrong about bitcoin mining

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk recently spoke out regarding the energy consumption of bitcoin (BTC-USD) and other cryptocurrency mining operations, questioning the sustainability of current levels of power consumption and emphasizing the importance of adopting renewable energy sources.  However, Don Vo, CEO of VBit Technologies, told Yahoo Finance Live that he believes Musk is wrong about the issue. “I think Elon Musk is wrong, or maybe he’s just setting up a story for his front and his future… Source link

Google investigates why a carrier linked VPN ads to an SMS two-factor code

Earlier this week, Australian developer Chris Lacy tweeted about a curious experience while logging into a rarely used Google account. When Google texted his two-factor authentication code, the message popped up along with an ad including a link for VPN services. Considering the downsides of phishing or malware distribution attached to a code that’s specifically intended to keep your account secure, this didn’t go over well. While Lacy did not name the carrier who delivered the text,… Source link

Google’s iOS app has a secret pinball Easter egg now

The Google app on iOS appears to have gotten a new Easter egg: a rather entertaining little pinball app hidden away in the “Tabs” menu. The game appears to have been added a few weeks ago, as spotted by several YouTube videos and a Reddit post in the middle of June. Opening the pinball game is simple: switch over to the Tabs, uh, tab in Google’s iOS app, clear out any open tabs, and then wait for the colorful shapes to start creeping up from the bottom of the screen. Swipe up on… Source link

Trump Organization prosecutors are starting small, aiming bigger

It sounds anticlimactic: After years of chatter about widespread tax evasion, Russian funding and sketchy shell companies, the first charges prosecutors are leveling against the Trump Organization involve fringe benefits for one employee. It wouldn’t even be news if it weren’t the Trump Organization. But the employee, Allen Weisselberg, is the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer, with intimate knowledge of all the money that flows in and out of the family business of former… Source link

‘There’s a delayed consequence’ for unvaccinated America

The continued spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 could pose a serious risk to the U.S., particularly the unvaccinated population, experts say. Currently, the variant accounts for 1 in 4 cases in the U.S., according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But that number could keep rising if vaccination rates don’t start picking up quickly enough. Among those ages 18 and up in the U.S., 57.4% are fully vaccinated, while 66.5% has received at least one… Source link

Why the Fed is getting worried about the most boring thing in crypto

Unlike crypto critics who attack bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for being too volatile, the Federal Reserve is increasingly sounding the alarm over investigating the coins that set out to be far more boring: stablecoins. As their name suggests, stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that set out to remain stable over their lifetimes and try to maintain a value as close to $1 (or other base currencies) as possible. Tether, the largest stablecoin in the world with a market cap of more than $60… Source link
