Google just made a key concession to smaller search rivals in Europe

SOPA Images | Contributor | Getty Images LONDON — Google said Tuesday that it will stop charging a fee for search engines to appear in a list of default search engines on Android that’s exclusive to European users. The so-called “choice screen” was introduced by Google in 2019 in response to a record $5 billion antitrust fine from the European Union targeting anti-competitive practices in its smartphone software. Search engines would have to take part in blind auctions in which they bid to… Source link

Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the search engine a public utility

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has filed a lawsuit asking a court to declare Google a public utility that should be regulated as such. “Google uses its dominance of internet search to steer Ohioans to Google’s own products – that’s discriminatory and anti-competitive,” Yost said in a statement. “When you own the railroad or the electric company or the cellphone tower, you have to treat everyone the same and give everybody access.” The lawsuit, filed in Delaware County Common Pleas… Source link

The 559,000 jobs the U.S. added in May continue to puzzle economists, who predicted 675,000 additions for the month and 1 million additions a month earlier as the economy recovers. They’ve put forth explanations from lack of child care to persistent COVID-related safety concerns. Now, another culprit can be added to the list: Some potential workers are instead staying home trading Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.  “They’re pulling back on the hours they’re looking to work based on what’s… Source link

Google ditches pay-to-play Android search choice auction for free version after EU pressure – TechCrunch

Google is ditching a massively unpopular auction format that underpins an choice screen it offers in the European Union, it said today. Eligible search providers will be able to freely participate. The auction model was Google’s ‘remedy’ of choice — following the 2018 EU $5BN antitrust enforcement against Android — but rivals have always maintained it’s anything but fair, as we’ve reported previously (here, here, here, for eg). The Android choice screen presents users in… Source link

The Green Bay Packers kicked off their full squad minicamp Tuesday without Aaron Rodgers, marking the first time in Rodgers’ 16-year NFL career that he is a holdout.  The star quarterback appears to have now skipped the entire Packers offseason program, as he had already failed to show up for all three phases of the franchise’s voluntary workout sessions (also a first in his career).
