Apple, Google and a Deal That Controls the Internet
A former Google executive, who asked not to be identified because he was not permitted to talk about the deal, said the prospect of losing Apple’s traffic was “terrifying” to the company. The Justice Department, which is asking for a court injunction preventing Google from entering into deals like the one it made with Apple, argues that the arrangement has unfairly helped make Google, which handles 92 percent of the world’s internet searches, the center of consumers’ online lives.

Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is a mild-mannered software engineer who is not good at games of verbal fisticuffs with US politicians. He received a drubbing last month during the “big tech” congressional hearing. Pichai can, however, summon lawyers and lobbyists galore as soon as the game gets more serious, which it definitely has. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) last week launched a huge and historic antitrust case against Google, accusing the… Source link

There’s so much to like about what James Franklin has done at Penn State. He’s rebuilt the program from the throes of NCAA probation, turned the Nittany Lions into a consistent College Football Playoff contender and brought a sense of football normalcy to a town and program that desperately needed it. Franklin is one of the sport’s top-10 coaches, something that can’t be questioned after his resuscitation of Vanderbilt and resurrection of Penn State. He’s won 70% of his games at… Source link

Pardon stating the obvious, but World Series games are important. Important enough that every plate appearance, every pitch is important. Championship-deciding. Basically, they are not the time you want to see a pitch thrown straight down the middle of strike zone called a ball. And yet, late in Game 4 of the 2020 World Series, home plate umpire Chris Guccione delivered one of the biggest endorsements for robot umpires you will ever see. It happened in the eighth inning, with two men on and… Source link

We entered the postponed 2020 Big Ten season thinking that Penn State was going to be Ohio State’s biggest challenger in the East. It took hours for that notion to get thrown flat on its face. The No. 8 Nittany Lions lost 36-35 in overtime to Indiana on Saturday afternoon while No. 18 Michigan looked fantastic in a 49-24 win at No. 21 Minnesota. It was easy to think that Saturday night was going to be a disaster for Michigan. The Wolverines’ opening possession ended with a blocked punt… Source link

The Los Angeles Lakers are NBA champions, and there is little reason to think that title wasn’t earned. The team was dominant before the COVID-19 hiatus, then looked similar dominant in the NBA playoffs at Walt Disney World. However, Miami Heat president Pat Riley has something to say about the one series the Lakers didn’t win in five games. Pat Riley: Heat could have pushed series to 7 games at 100 percent In an interview with the Miami Herald, Riley was asked about the Heat’s six-game… Source link

Indiana upset No. 8 Penn State 36-35 in overtime on Saturday. The game’s ending sequence was one of the wildest you will ever see. The game went into overtime and Penn State struck first to take a 35-28 lead. When Indiana scored, head coach Tom Allen opted to keep his offense on the field to go for two points and the win. It came down to the slimmest of margins. IU quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was flushed out of the pocket and forced to dive for the pylon. Penix had to stretch the ball… Source link

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov putting Justin Gaethje to sleep and improving his MMA career to 29-0 was impressive enough. Then UFC president Dana White revealed after the fight that Nurmagomedov’s corner said the fighter was three weeks removed from a broken toe. “We’re all lucky that we got to see him fight tonight,” White said. “Apparently he broke his foot. Yeah, three weeks ago. So he has two broken toes and a bone in his foot that’s broken, or something like… Source link

Lane Kiffin should be prepared for a fine from the SEC this week. Kiffin criticized the officiating crew assigned to Ole Miss’ game Saturday after the Rebels lost 35-28 to Auburn. The Ole Miss coach retweeted a replay from the game that showed a kickoff bouncing off the finger of Auburn RB Shaun Shivers. The ball continued to roll into the end zone after hitting Shivers’ finger and Ole Miss recovered it for what would have been a touchdown. But the officiating crew said that the ball never… Source link
