Max Verstappen’s title coronation will have to wait at least one more race. Verstappen finished seventh Sunday in a weird Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix as his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez won the race. Perez and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were far and away the fastest on the track while Verstappen, who started eighth, got only as high as fifth before his chances of a podium disappeared when he overdrove a corner trying to pass Lando Norris and had to pit for new tires. Calling Max Verstappen a massive favorite to win the Italian Grand Prix may be an understatement. Verstappen has won 10 of the first 14 races of the 2022 Formula 1 season and enters Sunday’s race (9 a.m. ET, ESPN2) at a wild -275 to win. Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel said Thursday that he wouldn’t participate in the Russian Grand Prix later this year if the race is still on the 2022 Formula 1 calendar. Vettel made his remarks at preseason testing in Spain in the hours after Russia invaded Ukraine. Vettel has been outspoken on numerous issues over the last few seasons and made it clear that a Russian Grand Prix would go on without him if it’s still held on Sep. 25.
