Iranian state-sponsored hackers have discovered ways to infiltrate the Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook inboxes of at least two dozen high-profile users and download their content, according to a report from the Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG). The government-backed group known as Charming Kitten originally developed a hacking tool called Hyperscape in 2020 and has used it to orchestrate the recent cyberattacks. The program, as described in a proposal from attorneys from Google, would allow emails from federal campaigns and committees in the program “that meet objective security criteria” and do not otherwise break Gmail’s terms of service to “not be affected by forms of spam detection to which they would otherwise be subject” and automatically land in a user’s inbox. WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – It’s not every day that people check their spam folders – but it could be the destination for dozens of campaign emails intended for your inbox. A North Carolina State University study found that Google has been sending 68 percent of Republican campaign emails to spam – while just 8 percent of Democratic ones met the same fate. Sen. Google’s Inbox experiment was a glorious thing while it lasted. Launched as an invitation-only service in 2014, it was the company’s next-gen email client.
