Google says Assistant Driving Mode isn’t dying, but it sure seems dead to us

Google says Assistant Driving Mode isn’t dying, but it sure seems dead to us

Summary Google backtracks on killing off Assistant Driving Mode, but users will still lose access to the app launcher within Maps. Without the app launcher, all that exists of Assistant Driving Mode is a media player and an Assistant shortcut, effectively leaving the UI dead regardless of its name. The shift to Android Auto and Automotive suggests that Google may leave older vehicles and drivers behind, with no new car-friendly UI attempts in sight. In a classic case of… Source link

Google Assistant Driving Mode isn’t dead, but it’s now just a bar

Google Assistant Driving Mode isn’t dead, but it’s now just a bar

Earlier this month, Google announced it was deprecating a slew of Assistant features. One of those removals was the “App Launcher” in Assistant Driving Mode, which most people assumed was the entire experience. Google tells us that is not the case, and here’s what will be left of Assistant Driving Mode after February 7. In short, Assistant Driving Mode is the black bar that appears at the bottom of Google Maps when you’re navigating. At the moment, it can… Source link

Hey Google, I was using that button!

Hey Google, I was using that button!

Every time another Google app or feature bites the dust — even a small, relatively inconsequential one — I get annoyed. Really annoyed. Here’s the thing: there are Google Assistant-equipped devices in three rooms of my relatively small house: living room, bedroom, and office. Which means, unfortunately, that when I say “Hey, Google” out loud to my phone, I am just as likely to get a reaction from one — or more — of those three devices. (Yes, I know that’s not supposed to… Source link

He Was Arrested for Making a Joke on Facebook. A Jury Just Awarded Him $205,000 in Damages.

On a Friday in March 2020, a dozen or so sheriff’s deputies wearing bulletproof vests descended upon Waylon Bailey’s garage at his home in Forest Hill, Louisiana, with their guns drawn, ordered him onto his knees with his hands “on your fucking head,” and arrested him for a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The SWAT-style raid was provoked by a Facebook post in which Bailey had made a zombie-themed joke about COVID-19. Recognizing the harm inflicted by that flagrantly… Source link

Google cofounder Larry Page has purchased another private island, this time in Puerto Rico. In 2018, Page, whose net worth is estimated to be approximately $127 billion, bought the island of Cayo Norte for $32 million, Business Insider recently reported. Cayo Norte is located between Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Page purchased the island in two separate transactions via a limited liability company called U.S. Virgin Island Properties, which Business Insider… Source link

Can This A.I.-Powered Search Engine Replace Google? It Has for Me.

Can This A.I.-Powered Search Engine Replace Google? It Has for Me.

For my entire adult life, whenever I’ve had a question about the world or needed to track down something online, I’ve gone to Google for answers. But recently, I’ve been stepping out on Google with a new, A.I.-powered search engine. (No, not Bing, which is dead to me after it tried to break up my marriage last year.) It’s called Perplexity. The year-old search engine, whose founders previously worked in A.I. research at OpenAI and Meta, has quickly become one of the most buzzed-about… Source link

Google inks major new offshore wind deal

Google inks major new offshore wind deal

Google announced its biggest deal yet to purchase offshore wind energy for its data centers in Europe, signing power purchase agreements to support two new wind farms off the coast of the Netherlands. It’s part of Google’s plan to match all of its data center electricity consumption with clean energy generation on a 24/7 basis by 2030. To do that, the company will need to help get more renewable energy, including offshore wind, pulsing through power grids where it operates. It shared… Source link
